Established
in 1395, Gyeongbok Palace is also called
¡°Northern Palace¡± because it is located
more toward the north compared to Changdeok
Palace (Eastern Palace) and Gyeonghee Palace
(Western Palace). Gyeongbok Palace (No.117
Historical Number) prides itself for having
the largest magnitude and being the most
beautiful among the 5 other palaces. In
the Gyeongbok Palace, the most representative
edifices of the Joseon Dynasty, Gyeonghoe-ru
Pavilion and Hyangwonjeong Pond still remain.
Woldae and sculptures of Geunjeongjeon
(The Royal Audience Chamber) represent
the past sculpture art which was the trend
back then. The National Palace Museum of
Korea is located south of Heungnyemun Gate,
and the National Folk Museum is located
east within Hyangwonjeong. |

Traditional Village |

In
the place where the Village of Traditional Houses
now stands, Pil-dong area at the northern foot
of Mt. Namsan, crystal clear streams flowed and
the Cheonu-gak Pavillion once stood, making it
a popular summer resort area during the Joseon
dynasty. In order to recreate the beauty of the
ancient times, a traditional Korean garden, through
which flows a stream, with a pavilion in the
woods were constructed. Five traditional Korean
houses, including houses of commoners, and the
residences of high government officials- owners
of the eight largest mansions in Seoul- were
moved onto a 7,934 square-meter lot of land. |

Cheonggyecheon
Stream used to exist merely as an overpass forgotten
in 1970 until it was restored in 2005, becoming
a haven of natural beauty amidst the bustle of
city life. Narae Bridge, expressing a butterfly
in flight, and Gwanggyo Bridge, symbolizing the
harmony of the past and future, are only 2 of
more than 20 beautiful bridges that are laid
throughout the path of the stream. The ¡®Rhythmic
Wall Stream¡¯, lined with fine marble, various
sculptures, and Korea¡¯s 8th stonebuilding, Palseokdam,
adorn the Cheonggyecheon Stream.Furthermore,
the Deoksugung Palace, Seoul Plaza, the Sejong
Center, Insa-dong Street, the Changdeokgung Palace,
and the Changgyeonggung Palace all lie adjacent
to the Cheonggyecheon Stream, allowing visitors
to easily visit the tourism sites after a leisurely
stroll along the stream. |
